GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB uses a 8 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1260 MHz. The GDDR6X memory runs at a speed of 1188 MHz on this specific card. It features 8960 SPUs as well as 280 TAUs and 112 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which has core clock speeds of 1500 MHz on the GPU, and 2500 MHz on the 20480 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 5376 SPUs along with 336 TAUs and 192 ROPs.

Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 350 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (17%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should in theory perform a small bit faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XT in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Difference: 115098 (14%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT will be a lot (approximately 43%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 151200 (43%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should be quite a bit (approximately 104%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 146880 (104%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
