Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs Radeon VII

Intro

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX comes with core clock speeds of 1855 MHz on the GPU, and 2500 MHz on the 24576 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 6144 SPUs along with 384 TAUs and 192 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon VII, which features GPU core speed of 1400 MHz, and 16384 MB of HBM2 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 4096-bit bus. It also features 3840 Stream Processors, 240 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon VII 295 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XTX 355 Watts
Difference: 60 Watts (20%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon VII, in theory, should perform a little bit faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX in general. (explain)

Radeon VII 1048576 MB/sec
Radeon RX 7900 XTX 983040 MB/sec
Difference: 65536 (7%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is much (approximately 112%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon VII. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 712320 Mtexels/sec
Radeon VII 336000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 376320 (112%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is superior to the Radeon VII, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 356160 Mpixels/sec
Radeon VII 89600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 266560 (298%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
