GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB features a core clock frequency of 783 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 902 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB, which features a core clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 480 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 63 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Difference: 43 Watts (68%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB should in theory be a bit superior to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 6272 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB should be quite a bit (approximately 31%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5856 (31%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB is a lot (more or less 96%) more effective at AA than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6128 (96%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
