GeForce GTX 580 vs Radeon HD 7950

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 features core speeds of 772 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 512 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 7950, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1250 MHz on this specific model. It features 1792 SPUs as well as 112 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 580 244 Watts
Difference: 44 Watts (22%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 7950 should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 580 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 240000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
Difference: 47616 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 should be much (about 81%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 580. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 89600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 40192 (81%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 is quite a bit (more or less 45%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 7950, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11456 (45%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
