GeForce 9600 GT 1GB vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GT 1GB features a GPU core clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 64 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7750, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1125 MHz on this specific model. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 7750 55 Watts
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 95 Watts
Difference: 40 Watts (73%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7750 should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 14400 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 should be a lot (about 23%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 20800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4800 (23%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 will be much (more or less 23%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (23%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
