Radeon HD 4850 512MB vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The Radeon HD 4850 512MB comes with a clock frequency of 625 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 993 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5670, which has core speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 4850 512MB 110 Watts
Difference: 49 Watts (80%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5670 should in theory be a bit faster than the Radeon HD 4850 512MB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4850 512MB 63552 MB/sec
Difference: 448 (1%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4850 512MB will be quite a bit (approximately 61%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 512MB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9500 (61%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4850 512MB should be quite a bit (more or less 61%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5670, and capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 512MB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3800 (61%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
