GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M comes with a clock speed of 944 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5670, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 775 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 400(80x5) SPUs as well as 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Difference: 1 Watts (2%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be quite a bit (about 290%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44916 (290%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be much (more or less 387%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5670, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 24008 (387%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
