GeForce GT 310 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GT 310 features a clock speed of 589 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 16 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which has a clock frequency of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 should be a lot (about 299%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 310. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 310 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14088 (299%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 should be a lot (more or less 219%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GT 310, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 310 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5164 (219%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
