GeForce GT 210 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GT 210 comes with core clock speeds of 589 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 940 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 320 SPUs as well as 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R5 M255 is 25% faster than the GeForce GT 210 in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 210 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 will be a lot (about 299%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14088 (299%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 will be a lot (about 219%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 210, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5164 (219%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
