GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) has core speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which has a clock frequency of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R5 M255 should perform much faster than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M255 is a lot (more or less 118%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10160 (118%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M255 is superior to the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM), by far. (explain)

Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (74%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
