Radeon R9 M265X vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M265X has core clock speeds of 575 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this particular model. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be quite a bit (more or less 26%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6000 (26%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M270X is superior to the Radeon R9 M265X, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
