Radeon HD 4730 vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4730 features clock speeds of 700 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M270X, which features core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M270X should be much faster than the Radeon HD 4730 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 14400 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X is quite a bit (more or less 29%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4730. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6600 (29%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be a lot (about 107%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4730, and also able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6000 (107%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
