GeForce 830M vs GeForce 940M

Intro

The GeForce 830M features core speeds of 1029 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 256 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce 940M, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 1072 MHz. The DDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 940M should be 11% faster than the GeForce 830M overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M will be quite a bit (about 56%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9264 (56%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 940M is the winner, though only just barely. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 344 (4%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
