GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon HD 4770

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M has a GPU clock speed of 797 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1152 Stream Processors, 96 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4770, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 750 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific card. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 860M 45 Watts
Radeon HD 4770 80 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (78%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 860M should in theory be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4770 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4770 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be much (approximately 219%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 4770. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 52512 (219%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 860M is the winner, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 12000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 752 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
