Radeon R9 M270X vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M270X comes with a GPU core speed of 725 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M365X, which comes with core speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X is a lot (about 28%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8000 (28%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X will be much (approximately 28%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R9 M270X, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
