Radeon HD 4850 512MB vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4850 512MB has a GPU core clock speed of 625 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 993 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M370X, which comes with clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M370X should be 13% faster than the Radeon HD 4850 512MB overall, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4850 512MB 63552 MB/sec
Difference: 8448 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X is much (approximately 28%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 4850 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 512MB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7000 (28%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X should be quite a bit (more or less 28%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 4850 512MB, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4850 512MB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2800 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
