GeForce GT 440 3GB vs Radeon R9 M375

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB features a GPU core speed of 594 MHz, and the 3072 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 144 Stream Processors, 24 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M375, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1015 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a frequency of 1100 MHz on this card. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 440 3GB should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M375 in general. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M375 35200 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (23%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M375 will be much (approximately 185%) better at AF than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375 40600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26344 (185%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M375 is the winner, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375 16240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1984 (14%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
