GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti has a clock speed of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1026 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M380, which features core clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be 3% quicker than the Radeon R9 M380 overall, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 2496 (3%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 will be quite a bit (about 39%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11200 (39%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5600 (35%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
