Radeon RX 6800 XT vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 XT comes with a core clock frequency of 1825 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2000 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It features 4608 SPUs, 288 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which comes with a core clock frequency of 1825 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2000 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It features 5120 SPUs, 320 TAUs, and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT is a little bit (more or less 11%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6800 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 58400 (11%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have the exact same pixel rate, so theoretically they should be equally good at at anti-aliasing, and be able to handle the same screen resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
