GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon HD 3470 512MB

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 has core clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 790 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 48 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 3470 512MB, which uses a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 950 MHz on this specific model. It features 40(8x5) SPUs along with 4 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 3470 512MB is 20% quicker than the GeForce GT 315 in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 3470 512MB 30400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 5120 (20%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 315 is a lot (about 213%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB. (explain)

GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6800 (213%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 315 is superior to the Radeon HD 3470 512MB, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1800 (56%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
