GeForce GTX 465 vs GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 comes with core clock speeds of 607 MHz on the GPU, and 802 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 352 SPUs along with 44 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which has GPU clock speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1026 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 24 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
GeForce GTX 465 200 Watts
Difference: 84 Watts (72%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 465 should in theory be a little bit better than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 4096 (4%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti will be a bit (more or less 8%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2092 (8%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is a better choice, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2176 (11%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
