Radeon HD 4550 256MB vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The Radeon HD 4550 256MB makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 600 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific card. It features 80(16x5) SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which features a core clock frequency of 625 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also features a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 160 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4550 256MB 25 Watts
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
Difference: 6 Watts (24%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) will be just a bit (more or less 4%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 4550 256MB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 4800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 200 (4%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) will be a bit (approximately 4%) better at AA than the Radeon HD 4550 256MB, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 256MB 2400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 100 (4%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
