Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 775 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 63 Watts
Difference: 2 Watts (3%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB should be a lot (about 24%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3700 (24%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB is superior to the Radeon HD 5670, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 1GB 6400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 200 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
