GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 vs GeForce 940M

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 uses a 80 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 540 MHz. The DDR2 RAM runs at a speed of 400 MHz on this card. It features 32 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce 940M, which comes with GPU core speed of 1072 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 940M is 25% faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M is quite a bit (about 198%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17088 (198%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 940M is much (more or less 99%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4256 (99%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
