Radeon HD 4830 1GB vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4830 1GB comes with a core clock speed of 575 MHz and a GDDR4 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is made up of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 M260X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 825 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R7 M260X should in theory be a small bit superior to the Radeon HD 4830 1GB in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (11%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260X is a bit (more or less 8%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4830 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 18400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1400 (8%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4830 1GB is superior to the Radeon R7 M260X, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 4830 1GB 9200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2600 (39%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
