Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 features a GPU core clock speed of 668 MHz, and the 256 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 828 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320(64x5) Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M265, which has core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R7 M265 should be much faster than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 5504 (21%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 is quite a bit (about 63%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6712 (63%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 is a lot (approximately 84%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon R7 M265, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4888 (84%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
