Radeon R9 M265X vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M265X comes with a GPU clock speed of 575 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which has GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be much (approximately 26%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6000 (26%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X should be a lot (about 26%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M265X, and will be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
