Radeon HD 4830 512MB vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4830 512MB uses a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 575 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 900 MHz on this model. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M270X, which features GPU clock speed of 725 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M270X should in theory be much superior to the Radeon HD 4830 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4830 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 14400 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X will be much (approximately 58%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 4830 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 512MB 18400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10600 (58%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M270X is much (approximately 26%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 4830 512MB, and also able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 512MB 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2400 (26%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
