GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this particular card. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M270X, which features core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M270X should in theory be a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 14400 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB should be a small bit (approximately 16%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4600 (16%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M270X is superior to the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (21%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
