GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB vs Radeon R9 M275X

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB has clock speeds of 513 MHz on the GPU, and 792 MHz on the 320 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 Texture Address Units and 20 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M275X, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this card. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 M275X 50 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 143 Watts
Difference: 93 Watts (186%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M275X should be a little bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 8640 (14%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M275X will be a lot (approximately 46%) better at AF than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 36000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11376 (46%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M275X is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4140 (40%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
