Radeon R9 M365X vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon R9 M365X features a GPU clock speed of 925 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M370X, which features a clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X should be a little bit (more or less 16%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5000 (16%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X will be a bit (about 16%) better at AA than the Radeon R9 M370X, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (16%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
