GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 has core clock speeds of 783 MHz on the GPU, and 902 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 192 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M370X, which comes with GPU core speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M370X should perform much faster than the GeForce GTS 450 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 14272 (25%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X will be quite a bit (more or less 28%) better at AF than the GeForce GTS 450. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6944 (28%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X should be a small bit (about 2%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce GTS 450, and able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 272 (2%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
