Radeon HD 6770 1GB vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon HD 6770 1GB has core clock speeds of 900 MHz on the GPU, and 1050 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M370X, which features a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M370X should in theory be a bit better than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 67200 MB/sec
Difference: 4800 (7%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 1GB should be a little bit (about 13%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 36000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4000 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6770 1GB is the winner, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 14400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1600 (13%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
