GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon R9 M375X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 797 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 1152 SPUs along with 96 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M375X, which features a clock speed of 1015 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M375X is 13% quicker than the GeForce GTX 860M in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (13%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M should be much (about 88%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M375X. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 40600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35912 (88%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M375X is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 16240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3488 (27%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
