Radeon RX 6800 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 features a GPU core speed of 1700 MHz, and the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM runs at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 3840 Stream Processors, 240 Texture Address Units, and 96 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this card. It features 4608 SPUs as well as 288 Texture Address Units and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (20%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same bandwidth, so in theory they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT will be a lot (about 29%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 6800. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 117600 (29%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT should be quite a bit (about 43%) better at AA than the Radeon RX 6800, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 70400 (43%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
