Radeon RX 6800 XT vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 XT has a core clock speed of 1825 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2000 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It is made up of 4608 SPUs, 288 TAUs, and 128 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which features core clock speeds of 1825 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 5120 SPUs along with 320 Texture Address Units and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be a little bit (more or less 11%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 6800 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 58400 (11%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have the exact same pixel rate, so theoretically they should be equally good at at AA, and be able to handle the same resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
