Geforce GTX 780 vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 780 has a clock frequency of 863 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1502 MHz. It also features a 384-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 192 TAUs, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which features core clock speeds of 1968 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Geforce GTX 780 250 Watts
Difference: 90 Watts (56%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Geforce GTX 780 should perform a small bit faster than the Radeon RX 6600 XT overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 26240 (10%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT should be quite a bit (approximately 52%) better at AF than the Geforce GTX 780. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 86208 (52%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 84528 (204%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
