Radeon HD 6790 vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 6790 has a core clock frequency of 840 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1050 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 800 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which makes use of a 6 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 2200 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a speed of 2250 MHz on this particular card. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
Difference: 43 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6500 XT should in theory be a little bit superior to the Radeon HD 6790 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
Difference: 13056 (10%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be quite a bit (more or less 319%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6790. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 107200 (319%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be a lot (about 424%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6790, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 56960 (424%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
