GeForce 9800 GT 1GB vs GeForce GTS 450

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GT 1GB makes use of a 65/55 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a frequency of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 112 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTS 450, which features clock speeds of 783 MHz on the GPU, and 902 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 192 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 105 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Difference: 1 Watts (1%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTS 450 should be a little bit faster than the GeForce 9800 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 128 (0%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GT 1GB should be a lot (more or less 34%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTS 450. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8544 (34%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 will be much (approximately 31%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 9800 GT 1GB, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2928 (31%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
