GeForce GTX 460 1GB vs GeForce GTX 460 SE

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB has a core clock frequency of 675 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 336 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 460 SE, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 650 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 850 MHz on this specific model. It features 288 SPUs as well as 48 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 460 SE 150 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 1GB 160 Watts
Difference: 10 Watts (7%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB, in theory, should perform just a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 460 SE overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 115200 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 460 SE 108800 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (6%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 1GB should be quite a bit (approximately 21%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 460 SE. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 SE 31200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6600 (21%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 1GB is the winner, but only just. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 1GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 SE 20800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (4%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
